Product overview

The lubricant behind every tablet

Magnesium stearate is the magnesium salt of stearic acid, a long-chain saturated fatty acid. It is by far the most commonly used lubricant in pharmaceutical tablet and capsule manufacturing — present in an estimated 50 % or more of all commercial oral solid dosage forms worldwide.

Its function is mechanical: when blended at low concentration (typically 0.25 – 1.5 % w/w) into a powder or granulation prior to compression, the fine, plate-like magnesium stearate particles coat the surfaces of drug and excipient particles, forming a hydrophobic boundary layer. This layer reduces metal-to-powder friction during ejection from the die, prevents adherence of the blend to punch faces (anti-sticking) and improves overall powder flow (glidant effect).

A critical formulation consideration is the source of the fatty acid. Magnesium stearate can be produced from animal tallow or from vegetable oils (typically palm or coconut). For products targeting vegetarian, vegan, halal or kosher markets, vegetable-origin magnesium stearate is essential, and regulatory bodies increasingly require documented source traceability. Chelora supplies both conventional and certified vegetable-origin grades with full traceability documentation.

Over-blending or excessive concentration of magnesium stearate can retard drug dissolution by creating a persistent hydrophobic film on API particles. Best practice is to add it as the last component in the blending sequence and limit mixing to 2 – 5 minutes at low shear intensity. Specific surface area (SSA) is a key quality attribute that influences lubricant efficiency — higher SSA grades provide better coverage at lower concentrations.

Applications & end uses

Industries that depend on Magnesium Stearate

Tablet and capsule lubricant

Magnesium stearate is the most widely used lubricant in solid dosage manufacturing. Added at 0.25 – 1.5 % w/w, it reduces friction between the tablet blend and die wall during compression and between capsule fill and dosator/tamping pins during filling, preventing sticking and capping.

Anti-adherent in tablet compression

The hydrophobic film that magnesium stearate forms on powder particles prevents adhesion to punch faces and die walls (picking and sticking), ensuring consistent tablet weight, hardness and visual quality across long compression runs.

Glidant in powder blends

At low concentrations (< 1 %), magnesium stearate improves powder flow by coating particle surfaces, reducing inter-particle friction and enabling uniform die filling. This is particularly valuable for cohesive or poorly flowing granulations.

Mould release agent in food and confectionery

Food-grade magnesium stearate serves as a mould release and anti-caking agent in confectionery, pressed mints, chewing gum and supplement tablets, preventing sticking to moulds and packaging.

Cosmetic ingredient (pressed powders)

In colour cosmetics, magnesium stearate acts as a binder and slip agent in pressed powder compacts, blushers and eyeshadows, improving compressibility, adherence to skin and silky feel during application.

Supplement manufacturing

Nutraceutical and dietary supplement manufacturers use magnesium stearate as a flow agent and lubricant in vitamin, mineral and herbal tablets and capsules, ensuring consistent fill weight and smooth high-speed production.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about Magnesium Stearate

Why is vegetable-origin magnesium stearate important?+
Magnesium stearate can be manufactured from animal tallow or from vegetable (palm/coconut) oil. For vegetarian, vegan, halal and kosher products, vegetable-origin material is essential. Our vegetable-origin grade comes with a source traceability certificate confirming palm-derived manufacture. This is increasingly a regulatory and marketing requirement in global pharma and nutraceutical markets.
What is the typical usage level of magnesium stearate in tablets?+
The typical concentration is 0.25 – 1.5 % w/w of the total blend weight. Lower levels (0.25 – 0.5 %) are preferred for immediate-release tablets to minimize any impact on dissolution. Higher levels (up to 1.5 %) may be needed for sticky formulations or high-speed compression. Over-lubrication can retard dissolution and reduce tablet hardness, so optimisation trials are recommended.
Does magnesium stearate affect dissolution?+
At recommended levels, the effect is minimal. However, excessive magnesium stearate concentration or prolonged blending time can form a hydrophobic film on drug particles, slowing wetting and dissolution. Best practice is to add magnesium stearate at the final blending step and limit mixing to 2 – 5 minutes at low shear.
Is magnesium stearate safe for human consumption?+
Yes. Magnesium stearate has GRAS status (Generally Recognised As Safe) and is approved by the FDA, EMA and all major regulatory authorities as a pharmaceutical and food additive. It is present at very low levels in finished dosage forms and is metabolised to its component fatty acid (stearic acid) and magnesium, both naturally occurring dietary components.
What is the typical lead time for magnesium stearate orders?+
Standard lead time is 5 – 10 working days for domestic orders and 10 – 14 days for export, depending on grade and volume. Pharma and vegetable-origin grades are held in stock; specialty requirements may take 2 – 3 weeks.
Do you offer samples before bulk purchase?+
Yes. We supply 500 g to 1 kg samples for QC evaluation and formulation trials. Each sample comes with a COA so your lab can verify MgO assay, LOD, specific surface area and other parameters against your in-house specification before committing to a production order.
