Product overview

The stable salt of pantothenic acid for global nutrition

Calcium pantothenate is the calcium salt of D-pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), one of the eight essential B-complex vitamins. Because free pantothenic acid is an unstable, hygroscopic oil, it is commercially supplied and formulated as its calcium salt — a white to slightly yellow crystalline powder that is freely soluble in water and stable under normal storage conditions.

Pantothenic acid is the biosynthetic precursor to coenzyme A (CoA), a central cofactor in over 70 enzymatic pathways including fatty acid synthesis and oxidation, the citric acid cycle, acetylation reactions and steroid hormone biosynthesis. It is essential for energy metabolism, and its deficiency — though rare — leads to fatigue, irritability, numbness and gastrointestinal disturbance.

The D-isomer is the only biologically active form of pantothenic acid. Commercial calcium pantothenate for pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic use is exclusively the D-form. A racemic DL-calcium pantothenate is available at lower cost for animal feed applications, where only the D-component contributes to vitamin activity (the L-isomer is biologically inert and is excreted unchanged).

Chelora Pharmachem supplies D-calcium pantothenate in pharmacopoeia grades (IP, BP, USP) for pharma and cosmetics, as well as D- and DL- feed grades, with batch-specific COA and full regulatory documentation.

Applications & end uses

Industries that depend on Calcium Pantothenate

Vitamin B5 dietary supplements

Calcium pantothenate is the standard commercial form of vitamin B5 used in tablets, capsules, multivitamin blends and B-complex formulations. As the calcium salt, it offers superior stability and handling properties compared to free pantothenic acid.

Cosmetic & haircare active

Calcium pantothenate is the precursor to panthenol (provitamin B5), a cornerstone moisturising and conditioning agent in cosmetics. It is used in shampoos, conditioners, skin creams, hair serums and leave-on treatments for hydration, elasticity and barrier repair.

Animal nutrition & feed premixes

D-Calcium pantothenate is an essential B-vitamin additive in poultry, swine, aquaculture and ruminant feed premixes. It supports growth performance, feathering, reproduction and disease resistance. DL-calcium pantothenate (racemic) is also used in cost-sensitive feed applications.

Food fortification

Calcium pantothenate fortifies breakfast cereals, beverages, dairy products and infant formula as part of B-vitamin enrichment programmes. Its good water solubility and neutral taste make it easy to incorporate in processed food matrices.

Wound healing & dexpanthenol conversion

In the body, pantothenic acid is reduced to panthenol and then oxidised to pantothenic acid at the tissue level. Topical dexpanthenol (D-panthenol) — derived from calcium pantothenate — accelerates wound healing, reduces inflammation and supports skin regeneration in dermatology.

Coenzyme A biosynthesis

Pantothenic acid is the biosynthetic precursor to coenzyme A (CoA), a central cofactor in fatty acid metabolism, the citric acid cycle and acetylation reactions. Calcium pantothenate is used in metabolic research and enzymatic assay design.

Available grades

D-form and DL-form grades

The D-isomer is the biologically active form of pantothenic acid and is required for all pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food applications. The racemic DL-form (50 % D + 50 % L) is available at lower cost for animal feed where only the D-component has vitamin activity.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about Calcium Pantothenate

What is the difference between D-Calcium Pantothenate and DL-Calcium Pantothenate?+
D-Calcium pantothenate contains only the D-isomer (the naturally occurring, biologically active form of pantothenic acid). DL-Calcium pantothenate is the racemic mixture of D- and L-isomers — only the D-form has vitamin activity, so the DL-form has roughly half the biological potency per unit weight. DL is used in cost-sensitive animal feed applications; D-form is required for pharma, food and cosmetic use.
Which pharmacopoeia grades does Chelora supply?+
We supply D-Calcium Pantothenate meeting IP, BP and USP monograph specifications at pharma grade (assay >= 99.0 %). Feed grade D-form (>= 98.0 %) and DL-calcium pantothenate (>= 98.0 %, feed only) are also available. Each batch includes a COA confirming compliance with the relevant standard.
Is Calcium Pantothenate hygroscopic?+
Yes. Calcium pantothenate is moderately hygroscopic and should be stored in tightly sealed containers in a cool, dry place. Our pharmaceutical packaging uses HDPE-lined fibre drums with moisture-barrier seals to protect the material during storage and transit.
What is the typical lead time for bulk orders?+
Standard lead time is 5 – 10 working days for domestic orders and 10 – 14 days for export, depending on grade and volume. We can often expedite for urgent requirements.
Can Calcium Pantothenate be used in cosmetic formulations?+
Yes. D-Calcium pantothenate (pharma/cosmetic grade) is the raw material precursor for panthenol (provitamin B5), which is one of the most widely used cosmetic actives globally. It can be incorporated directly in formulations or converted to D-panthenol for use in moisturisers, hair conditioners and wound-healing creams.
Do you offer samples before bulk purchase?+
Yes. Sample quantities are available so your QC team can verify the material against your specification before you commit to a production order.
